National Mathematics Day
⬧ This year is the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan. The government of India has declared 2012, as the Year of Mathematics and his birth date 22nd December has been declared as the National Mathematics Day.
⬧ The world is still surprised by the hundreds of mathematical theories of Srinivasa Ramanujan. Many of those principles are such that they are not even understood yet. One may be shocked to hear that this mathematician, who studied in a small town called Kumbakonam in South India, had failed in his university examination. It is no less surprising that this great mathematician, rich in prodigious talent, left the world at the youthful age of just 32, but left behind a discovery that may reveal the secrets behind for many decades the brilliant minds of the world could not understand.
⬧ National Mathematics Day, celebrated every year on 22 December in the remembrance of world famous Indian mathematician Srinivasan Ramanujan, is one such celebration, which reminds us the rich tradition of Indian mathematics, gives us an opportunity to be proud of it. Ramanujan is called 'mathematician of mathematicians' and 'magician of numbers'. He is given this title for his contribution on 'number-theory'.
⬧ Ramanujan's talent can be estimated from the fact that more than 5000 of his theorems were printed after his death.
⬧ One of his friend from Kumbakonam, K. S. Srinivasan suddenly met Ramanujan in Chennai and he said surprisingly - "Ramanujan, they call you a genius." Showing his elbow, Ramanujan retorted "What! Just look at my elbow, it can tell you the real story." On careful observation, Srinivasan found the skin of Ramanujan's elbow had become black and thick. When asked, Ramanujan continued that "Day and night I do calculations on the slate, and every time I have to write and using a piece of cloth to erase is very time consuming. Therefore, I use my elbow to erase." My elbows are what making me a genius."
⬧ Ramanujan, who worked as a minor clerk in Madras Port, met the famous mathematician Professor G.H. Hardy, and sends a sample of his research. Amazed by Ramanujan's talent, Professor Hardy invited him to visit and work with him at Cambridge. After some time he was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society and Trinity College Cambridge.
⬧ Ramanujan's theorem have emerged as the foundation of modern mathematics and science. In true sense, he was the bearer of India's glorious mathematical tradition.
