World Meteorological Day
⬧ Every year on March 23, World Meteorological Day is celebrated all over the world.
⬧ This International Day is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the 'World Meteorological Organization' (WMO), which was established in the year 1950.
⬧ It was started to be celebrated in the year 1961.
⬧ It aims to make people aware of their role in protecting the Earth's atmosphere.
⬧ The theme for the year 2023 is 'The Future of Weather, Climate and Water Across Generations'.
⬧ The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is an intergovernmental organization with a membership of 192 countries and India is a member country of the World Meteorological Organization.
⬧ It has its origins in the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), which was established after the Vienna International Meteorological Congress of the year 1873.
⬧ WMO, established by the ratification of the WMO Convention on March 23, 1950, has become the specialized agency of the United Nations for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences.
⬧ The headquarters of the World Meteorological Organization is located in Geneva, Switzerland.
⬧ The World Meteorological Congress is the apex body of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
⬧ An annual report named 'State of the Global Climate' is prepared by the World Meteorological Organization.
