World Radio Day
⬧ Every year on 13 February 'World Radio Day' is celebrated.
⬧ This day is celebrated with the aim of increasing awareness among the general public and news media about the importance of radio and to encourage policy-makers to make information available through radio.
⬧ On October 20, 2010, at the request of the Spanish Radio Academy, Spain appealed to member states in the United Nations to celebrate a World Day dedicated to Radio.
⬧ After which UNESCO announced to celebrate World Radio Day on 13th February every year on 3rd November, 2011 in the 36th General Assembly held in Paris.
⬧ It is noteworthy that the anniversary of 'Radio UNO' of the United Nations also observed on 13 February, because on this day in 1946 the radio station was established there.
⬧ The theme of the year 2023 is 'Radio and Peace'.
⬧ Radio broadcasting in India was first started in June 1923 by Radio Club Mumbai but Bombay station came into existence as the first radio station in the country under the Indian Broadcast Company when Viceroy Lord Irwin inaugurated it on 23 July 1927.
⬧ On June 8, 1936, the Indian State Broadcasting Service was renamed as 'All India Radio' by which name it is popular till date.
⬧ Technically three types of radio broadcasting stations are working in our country – Medium Wave, Short Wave and MM broadcasting stations.
