World Day of Social Justice
● Every year on 20 February 'World Day of Social Justice' (WDSJ) is observed.
● Its main objective is to promote the efforts of the international community in the field of poverty eradication, promotion of full employment and decent work, establishing gender equality, access to social welfare and justice for all.
● Social justice refers to the principle necessary for the peaceful coexistence and development of countries, which is related not only to intra-national equality but also to the conditions of intra-national equality.
● In order to advance the concept of social justice, the inequality in the society in terms of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability has to be eliminated.
● The theme for the year 2023 is 'Overcoming Barriers and Unleashing Opportunities for Social Justice'.
● On June 10, 2008, the International Labor Organization unanimously adopted the International Labor Organization's Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization.
● It was one of the main 3 manifesto principles adopted by the International Labor Organization since the year 1919. The other two important principles adopted were the Philadelphia Declaration of 1944 and the 1998 'Declaration of Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work'.
● The 2008 Declaration expresses the contemporary concept of social justice in the mandate of the International Labor Organization in the era of globalization.
● It is the result of a tripartite consultation initiated in the wake of the International Labor Organization's report on the social dimension of globalization.
● After this, according to the objectives and goals of the World Conference for Social Development, it was decided in the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate 20 February every year as 'World Day of Social Justice'. The United Nations approved this decision on November 26, 2007, and from 2009 this day was observed.
● The Preamble of the Indian Constitution describes the source of the rights of the constitution, the nature of authority and the aims and objectives of the constitution, where social, economic and political justice have been set as the goals of the constitution.
● Protection of social justice has also been done through various provisions of Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles.
