Jayalalithaa
● Jayalalithaa was born in Mysore (now in the state of Karnataka) on February 24, 1948 at a place called Melukote.
● She belonged to a Tamil Iyengar family.
● Her father Jayaram had passed away at a young age.
● Jayalalithaa completed her schooling from Bishop Cotton Girls' High School, Chennai and Sacred Heart Matriculation School, also known as Presentation Church Park Convent in Chennai.
● She received scholarship for higher studies from Government of India after completing matriculation in the year 1964.
● She acted in films in various languages including English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.
● Jayalalithaa was elected as a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Bodinayakkanur constituency in the year 1989 and was the first woman to become the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu.
● In February 1989, the two factions of the party reunited under the leadership of Jayalalithaa, who was unanimously elected general secretary of the united AIADMK.
● Jayalalithaa won the 1991 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections.
● She was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for a record sixth time on 23 May 2016.
● She was awarded the degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt) by the University of Madras in the year 1991.
● In the year 1993, she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters by Madurai Kamaraj University.
● In the year 2003, she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
● She was invited by the House of Lords, London to receive the "Women Politician of the Decade" award from the Asian Guild Awards in the year 2004.
● She was awarded the 'Golden Star of Honor and Dignity Award' in the year 2004 by the International Human Rights Defense Committee in recognition of her services in the field of gender equality and protection of the weaker section of the society in Tamil Nadu and India.
• When Jayalalithaa was sent to jail in the year 2014, many of her supporters committed suicide. In fact, Jayalalithaa's popularity is also high because her schemes directly connected to the public and her schemes are called 'Amma Brand'.
• Jayalalithaa died on 5 December 2016 in Chennai.
