Param Vir Chakra Naib Subedar Bana Singh
⬧ Naib Subedar Bana Singh was born on January 6, 1949 in 'Ranveer Singh Poha' of Jammu and Kashmir. Presently he lives in a small village 'Kadyal' of Jammu.
⬧ He joined the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment of the Indian Army at the age of just 19. He was promoted till the rank of Naib Subedar.
⬧ In June, 1987, the Pakistan Army established a post called 'Quaid Post' by occupying a 6450 meter high peak in the Siachen area. This post was strategically so important that the entire 'Saltoro Ridge' and the Siachen Glacier could be surveilled from here.
⬧ Naib Subedar Hemraj and ten other soldiers were sent under the leadership of 2/Lt. Rajeev Pandey to conquer this post, but this attack of India failed.
⬧ Colonel Rai, who was supervising the operation, urged his officers to give him one more chance to capture 'Quaid Post'. After this Naib Subedar Bana Singh was given the command of this operation.
⬧ In June, 1987, Naib Subedar Bana Singh along with some other soldiers started moving towards the enemy. Acting shrewdly at a distance of 15 meters from the Quaid Post, he attacked the post by lobbing a grenade and locked it from outside.
⬧ Some Pakistani soldiers scampered towards them and some were killed. Meanwhile, Major Virender Singh and his troop also came and joined Bana Singh. Some Pakistani soldiers were absconding by climbing back over the moat, but they were killed by light machine gun firing by Major Virender and his men.
⬧ On June 27, 1987, Brigade Commander Brigadier C S Nugyal reached Quaid Post and embraced Bana Singh. He announced that henceforth the name of this post would be 'Bana Top'.
⬧ Bana Singh displayed exemplary courage, leadership and intelligence in recapturing Quaid Post from the Pakistanis. For his courage and efficient leadership, he was awarded the 'Param Vir Chakra', India's highest gallantry award.
⬧ Thus, due to the indomitable courage and exemplary bravery of Naib Subedar Bana Singh, at present no part of Siachen Glacier is under the occupation of Pakistan.
