Major Somnath Sharma
● Major Somnath Sharma was born on January 31, 1923 in Kangra district.
● His father Amarnath Sharma was a Medical Corps officer.
● Somnath was called by the name 'Somi' in his childhood.
● He became the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest gallantry award.
● He was commissioned into the 8th Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment (later 4th Battalion, Kumaon Regiment) on 22 February 1942.
● He is recognized for his efforts in securing the vital Srinagar airport during the Pakistan-led tribal insurgency in 1948.
● It was because of his determination that the Indian Army got the much needed time to fly into Srinagar and ensure its security against Pakistan.
● He sacrificed his life for the nation at the young age of 25 years.
● His citation reflected his valour, patriotism and courage. He was the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), awarded posthumously for his gallantry and sacrifice.
● Recently the Government of India has named the island number 'INAN370' of Andaman as Somnath Island after him.
